Toronto’s Art Museum of Toronto was formed in 1900 by a group of private individuals and the Toronto Society of Arts members. The institution’s founders were George A. Cox, Lady Eaton, Sir Joseph W. Flavelle, J.W.L Forster, E.F.B. Johnston, Sir William Mackenzie, Hartley Massey, Prof James Mavor, Robert Willmott (ornamental garden designer), and F Nicholls (landscape architect). All of the officials The Grange was formally opened as an art museum. The museum gained title to The Grange and the surrounding property in 1911. Shortly afterward, the museum agreed with Toronto’s municipal government to maintain the grounds south of The Grange as a municipal park.
During the 1990s, plans were developed to construct a pedestrian walkway from University Avenue to the art gallery. However, conflicting changes on adjacent properties, the City of Toronto’s lack of support, and Gehry’s later development of another renovation plan caused the museum to abandon plans for a pedestrian walkway in the early 2000s.
In 2018, the museum renamed Emily Carr’s 1929 painting The Indian Church to Church at Yuquot Village to eliminate culturally insensitive wording from works in its collection. A note beneath the painting provided the title of the work when it was known by its previous name and Carr’s usage of the term to signify “the language of her time. The museum has also looked at the titles of several other pieces on a case-by-case basis, as works from the Canadian collection are removed from exhibits or stored.
